    Frequently Asked Questions

Cylinders are sent at the owner’s risk. Send to “The Tuning Works, Unit 13, Reedspire, Enterprise Park, Sleaford, NG34 8GL”. We will attempt to repair but if unsuccessful no charges will be made other than return postage.

Standard turnaround time is usually approximately 3-4 weeks from receipt. You will be invoiced about 1 week before the job is completed.

Should you be unhappy with any repair we will only consider a refund of monies paid after we have received the cylinder back for inspection. We are not liable for other losses and will refund up to a maximum of the amount of money paid to us.

Sometimes pinholes can occur due to porosity or contamination off-gassing from the casting. It does not affect running.

Some areas are impossible to access and can’t be repaired. Welded cylinders do not always replate as well as undamaged ones, please bear this in mind. Welded bridges can fail again and cannot be guaranteed to succeed. There is no warranty on weld repairs.

Port shaping may be affected by welding deep scores and port area damage, especially if the cylinder has to be machined out further.

If you have a complaint or quality concern this is to be addressed before fitting and running in an engine. Fitting and using is an acceptance of the work carried out being of correct specification as ordered.

Please be aware that exhaust valve clearances can be affected so it is vital to check your valves move freely by hand without catching on any plating or burrs. Anything like this needs to be cleared by the engine builder or call TTW for advice.

If the plating fails to bond in use (very, very rare) we will investigate why and repair free of charge if viable, within a limited timeframe.

    Poeton Aptec

Poeton Aptec warrants repair to be fit for purpose as it leaves our premises and it is the duty of the engine builder to ensure parts are fitted correctly and that correct recommended clearances are maintained at all times. This limited warranty does not apply to any product that has been used for any high-performance application, or racing, or subject to misuse, mishandling, neglect (including but not limited to improper maintenance), improper installation, modification, repair or adjustment performed by any 3rd party.

Steel/Brass parts All steel parts should be removed by the customer prior to sending the cylinder. Steel parts will not survive the re-plating process and as such we cannot take any responsibility for their condition after processing. We will however try to mask any parts that cannot be removed, but without liability. Any removable parts that are left in place will be removed, if possible, prior to processing and a charge made for this; if the part breaks or cannot be removed and is lost in process then we will not accept liability for this.

    Welds

Welds in cast aluminium will often lead to a porous structure depending on the quality of the casting. Our Apticote Ceramic 2000 coating will not fill these holes and so some pitting may be evident in the honed finish which cannot be avoided due to the nature of aluminium castings. This does not usually lead to an adhesion problem, but if the casting is very porous and oils are trapped in these pores prior to processing this could then lead to an adhesion issue. Two stroke port bridges often crack and can be repaired, however it must be noted that this is a repair to the cylinder structure and that there is a reason for the failure in the first place. If this is not addressed by the owner then it is likely the bridge will crack again at some point which we will not accept liability for. When welding inside exhaust ports there is often need to dress weld back to allow operation of the power valve, this should be provided by the customer when this kind of work is required.

Size Parts will be reprocessed when possible to the manufacturer’s nominal bore size, unless a piston and bore clearance have been provided. Where parts are overbored above the manufacturer’s nominal bore size then no liability will be accepted for geometric tollerancing (as thin walled cylinders will deflect when honing) or for the suitability of bore size. Oversized cylinders have been known to crack due to their smaller cylinder wall thickness.
